Allie couldn’t help but stare at Tony as he stalked out of the student center. The look on his face was pure anger, but she didn’t get why. After all, he was the one who’d disappeared for weeks and then couldn’t be bothered to speak to her. In fact, just thinking about it piqued her own annoyance.

“Hey, Allison,” said Blake. “Are you listening?”

“What? Sorry. I was thinking about the auditions.”

“Oh, I think you’ll get the part of Maria just fine.”

“Me? With my blonde hair?”

“This is theater. You’ll just wear a black wig, and maybe if you worked on your tan you’d fit the role more.”

“I don’t like to tan. My skin’s too fair. I burn, then freckle.”

“Imagine, a girl who doesn’t like to tan. Then why do you go to Malibu so much?”

“I went once. I haven’t been back. Besides, it’s getting too cold to hang out there.”

“I thought you were from hardy New England stock, woman. High sixties is cold?”

“It is at night. And on the beach when the wind is blowing.”

“Well, you can get one of those spray tans for the performance. You’ll be right in character.”

“I suppose. I think Robyn is more suited for the role.”

“You’re selling yourself short,” said Blake.

“And what role do you want?” she said to change the subject.

“Tony, of course.”

“Tony?”

“Sure. I’ll be Tony to your Maria. We’ll make a lovely couple.”

“You don’t look like a Tony. What nationality was he supposed to be, anyway?”

“Polish-American.”

“You definitely do not look Polish.”

“It’s theater. I’ll dye my hair if I have to.”

“I’m sure your father would love that.”

“So I’ll dye it back.” He rolled his eyes. “My father’s not in charge of my body. It’s not the Middle Ages, for Pete’s sake.”

Allison laughed. “They say if you dye it too many times you’ll go bald.”

Blake smiled. “It’s good to hear you laugh, Allie.”

She smiled wanly. She still didn’t trust Blake, and only came here at his insistence when she thanked him for the flowers. But she was glad that Tony saw her with someone else, just so he wouldn’t think she was that broken up over his treatment of her.

However, even though she pulled off that lie in front of Tony and Blake, she still seethed inside over Tony being with that other girl. She couldn’t shake the sense that Tony belonged to her and that he had no business being with anyone else.

How she was going to get over that idea, she had no clue.
